EXPLAINING SPEAKING IN TONGUES: This is to eradicate the confusion around this topic. Some believe that speaking in tongues should be earthly languages like on the day of Pentecost. But that is wrong. On the day of Pentecost it was needful for God to reach all the other races who were present in Jerusalem on that day. Those languages were unknown to the the believers but the Holy Ghost used their spirits to speak in the languages of those people in order to reach them. Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.” So in that case it was unknown to the believing speaker but it was in the language of the unbeliever who was present cos it was meant for him or her. Then you get some that say that there must be an interpreter for all tongues. Did someone need an interpreter on the day of Pentecost ? No because in that case it was direct to those in concern. Now there is a time when a word of PROPHECY comes from God in a heavenly language and only that one needs an interpreter like the writing on the wall that Daniel had to interpret. ICor 14:5 ” I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.” In simple terms if the person prophesies in a heavenly tongue it would be great if it is interpreted – this is only for the PROPHECY in tongues so that the church can be edified ,1Cor14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh ( prophesies ) in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.” Then you get the time that you can pray or confess in a heavenly language and that is between you and God only. Do you think that needs an interpretation since it is meant for God`s ears only ? Absolutely not. 1Cor14:2 “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” 1Cor 14:22 “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.” So tongues have 3 categories , One in which you edify yourself when praying , one in which you prophesy that needs an interpretation and then the one that can be in any earthly language when there are unbelievers whose language it is ,1Cor14:22 “Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.” Now the gift of speaking in tongues is called DIVERSE KINDS OF TONGUES , 1Cor12:10 “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:” I hope this cleared up the confusion for some who really need to understand this gift.
