There is so much available to us in the supernatural realm that I’m sure you would agree we have yet to enter into. There are higher levels of hearing God’s voice and walking in miracles, power, authority, victory, wisdom and mighty manifestations of the Spirit. The truth is it is actually all right here in front of us and ready to be accessed, however it is up to us how much we want to step into it. How do we step in? The answer is not complicated, it’s simply by getting in the Spirit and building up spiritual momentum. If you were to regularly get in the Spirit and consistently do that, you would build up a spiritual momentum in you that begins to reach effortlessly into the supernatural realm and make it manifest in your life.

The supernatural that Jesus walked in on earth is available to every believer. Even though Jesus was God, He never ministered as God while on earth. He only ever ministered as a man empowered by the Holy Spirit and faith. That level that Jesus ministered at is what is also available to us, and even higher levels, if we believe His own words in John 14:12,

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”

Jesus never lied. He means that exactly what He did, and more, is available to every believer right now.

Here are 5 simple things that will help you get in the Spirit and build up spiritual momentum to increasingly access all that is available to you in the Spirit:

1) Fasting.

This is a powerful New Covenant practise that is very effective in helping you get in the Spirit. It’s where we choose to deny ourselves certain foods and entertainment in order to give ourselves to extended times of prayer and worship. It’s not about earning favour or blessing with God by our sacrifice, it’s about denying our flesh so we can get in the Spirit and become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit and to the spiritual realm.

At the very start of Christ’s ministry, just after He was baptised and filled with the Holy Spirit, He was led into the wilderness by the Spirit to fast for forty days. The Bible says in Luke 4:1 that Jesus went into the wilderness “full of the Spirit”, but when He came out, He was “in the power of the Spirit” (verse 14). If you want to move from being full of the Spirit to being in the power of the Spirit then fasting will help.

Why the wilderness? In the wilderness there were no distractions. No worldly influences like TV, Facebook, internet, video games and no McDonald’s, chips, chocolate or Coke! Just Jesus alone with the Holy Spirit, walking and fellowshipping together and sensitising Himself to the voice of God. He was fasting from physical food and entertainment but He was feasting on spiritual food and getting charged with the power of the Spirit.

It may not be practical for us to do forty days but the principle is still there. If we were to weekly or monthly give ourselves to some kind of fasting, it would help us to get in the Spirit and grow in the power of the Spirit.

The reason we don’t fast is probably the reason we should fast. We don’t ever want to deny ourselves food and entertainment, yet while are continually feasting on these natural things we are usually starving of spiritual things. It is hard to be in the Spirit when we are so dominated by the physical and emotional dependences of our body and mind. Sometimes we need to fast from food and worldly influences so we can feast in the Spirit and gather spiritual momentum.

Most times when we think about fasting we focus on the starving ourselves part, but we should focus on the feasting in the Spirit part. This is the whole point of fasting.

Why not decide right now, to set time apart for fasting? Perhaps don’t start with forty day, just start with one meal and use that time to pray and worship. Or try a full day. Then later perhaps add a day or two more to that. Try spend a whole week without social media or TV and spend more time in prayer, worship and the Word. I guarantee your spiritual momentum will increase and you will feel it!

2) Worship.

Worshipping is a very spiritual activity. When you worship God you are taking part in what is continually happening around the throne of God in the heavenly realm.

Worship is a lifestyle of surrender to the King, but it is also expressed in moments or times of worshipping Him. Worship is not about us it’s about Jesus, however the deeper we go in worship the further into the Spirit we will go, and in that place there is divine revelation, impartation, transformation and manifestation of God’s Kingdom in our lives.

Intimate worship and deep encounters with Jesus can only be achieved through grace (spirit), never the Law (flesh). Our ability to draw near to God’s throne, which is a throne of grace, doesn’t come through our works, its comes through Christ’s work on our behalf that we receive as a gift. This is what qualifies us to stand boldly before Him and encounter Him face to face. To know this truth and to draw near through grace is to “worship God in Spirit and truth”.

John 4:23-24But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The more you get in the Spirit the more you can worship God and the more you worship God the deeper you will go in the Spirit. Take time to worship God regularly. When you do this consistently you will build up momentum in the Spirit.

3) Praying in tongues.

This is literally a language that God has given us for the purpose of getting in the Spirit and building up momentum in the Spirit. It is a mysterious, or rather spiritual language between us and God that our mind can’t understand but our spirit can by revelation. As we pray in tongues our spirit is engaged and from our spirit we are praying to God.

1 Corinthians 14:2For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”

Verse 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays

The purpose of tongues is to take you into the spirit and build you up in the spirit.

Verse 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…

This is the powerful effect of tongues. To edify is to build up and strengthen, so when you pray in tongues your spirit is being built up and strengthen within you. This causes you to become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit, to your own spirit and to the spirit realm. The more you pray in tongues the more you build up spiritual momentum within yourself. If you were to consistently spend time everyday praying in tongues you would build up an increasing sensitivity to the spirit. This means you’ll begin to hear God’s voice clearer, experience His presence more intensely, grow in His anointing, find it easier to have faith, access the miraculous realm much easier, heighten your ability to discern what’s happening in the spirit realm and much more!

If this is what happens when we pray in tongues, surely God would want this for every believer? He does!

Verse 5I wish you all spoke with tongues…

Many people in the Church today discourage the use of tongues, even mock it, yet the apostle Paul’s wish was that every believer would speak in tongues. In fact in verse eighteen he almost boasts of how much he speaks in tongues,  “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all…” And in verse 39 he tells the church not to forbid tongues, “Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.”

Paul took the time to build himself up in the Spirit and had a high value for tongues. This is one of the reasons why he moved in such a high level of the Spirit. If you want to do the same, develop a lifestyle of praying in tongues. Ten, thirty, sixty minutes or more a day will have a dramatic spiritual effect on your life. The more consistently you do it the more spiritual momentum you will build up.

4) Meditate on the Word.

What do you spend your days thinking about? How often do you actually meditate on the Word of God? His Word is truth and it challenges lies and unbelief. Faith comes from hearing and understanding the Word of God. Faith is a spiritual force that causes supernatural things to happen in our life. As we meditate on God’s Word, we will build up a spiritual force of faith within us. God’s Word is like seed that we plant in our heart. Meditating on the Word is like watering that seed. The more we do that, the more that seed will grow in our life and eventually produce a harvest. This is the manifesting of what is available to us in the heavenly supernatural realm.

5) Sow to the Spirit, not the flesh.

Galatians 6:8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

This verse isn’t referring to a future heaven or hell, it’s referring to a quality of life that we can experience now here on earth. If we were to continually invest into our flesh, it will build up a harvest of corruption and destruction in our lives. However, if we were to continually invest in the Spirit it would build of a harvest of God’s eternal life manifesting in our life here on earth.

This is actually the simple key to building up spiritual momentum in your life. Simply sow to the Spirit. If you were to consistently get into the Spirit regularly through fasting, worship, prayer, praying in tongues and meditating on His Word you would increasingly experience a harvest of God’s infinite supernatural life manifesting in and through your life!

The supernatural realm of heaven is right here and accessible to every believer, but it is up to us to step in, and go deeper.

The more you get in the Spirit the more you will see, hear and experience supernatural things. Just like John the apostle…

Revelation 1: 9-18I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”
