Once you are born again and made alive in Christ there is no mechanism by which you can lose your salvation. There is no means that can make it possible for you to lose your salvation. To say that there is, is to undermine the doctrine of regeneration (being born again) and unification with Christ. Every scripture that sounds like you can lose your salvation needs to be interpreted through the doctrine of regeneration and unification with Christ otherwise you’ll end up with two gospels!
Here is the powerful truth about what happened to you when you were born again:
You were:
- United with Christ in His death, burial, resurrection, ascension and seating on the throne (Romans 6 2-4, Ephesians 2:6).
- Made one with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:19).
- Hidden in Christ and He became your life (Colossians 3: 1 – 3).
- Born of incorruptible seed (1 Peter 1:23).
- Made a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Made complete in Christ (Colossians 2: 9, 10).
- Given a new nature that is Gods perfect nature (Ephesians 4:23).
- Made perfect forever (Hebrews 10:14).
The key is that we were united with Christ and became one with Him. The power of this is that Christ has an indestructible life! It is eternally impossible for Christ to ever die again! Romans 6: 9 tells us that Christ died once and can never die again. Then it says to us in verse 11 that “in the same way” we are to reckon ourselves dead to sin but alive to God through Christ Jesus forevermore! What is the same way? Once! Christ died once and therefore you died once. Christ was raised once and forevermore and you were raised with Him once and forevermore. If you have died and been raised with Him already then it means that you can never die again, just as Christ can never die again. Your flesh can die but the real you, your spirit can never die!
Now in order for you to lose your salvation, this would have to happen: you would have to be able to die. You would have to become spiritually dead again. That is the only mechanism for you to lose your salvation. Some people say that if, as a “really mature Christian”, you reject your faith then you can lose your salvation. They say it as though that were a sufficient mechanism to explain losing your salvation. But it’s not sufficient! Not one bit! Why? Because it has become impossible for you as a born again person to die again! Why? Because you are united with Christ!
I wonder if these people have thought through what would have to happen in order for you to lose your salvation? God would have to kick you off the throne, send you back down to earth, kill you spiritually and put you in the grave, then put you back on the cross and resurrect you back into spiritual death! But that’s not all! Because you’re united with Christ, God would have to kick Jesus off the throne, send Him down to earth, kill Him again and resurrect Him into spiritual death. That can never happen to Jesus because He can never die again! And if it can never happen to Jesus, then it can never happen to you! You are in Him and that absolutely means that you can never die again. For all eternity you are in Him and are safe. His life has become your guarantee of eternal salvation. Now that is good news!
This is either true or it is not! I am utterly convinced by Scripture that it is! What about all the scriptures that sound like you can lose your salvation? Well do they supply an adequate mechanism by which you and Christ can die again? You need to make sure you are interpreting those scriptures correctly and know what they are really saying. If your interpretation contradicts the revelation I’ve just given, then chances are you’re not interpreting correctly!
Hebrews 7:22-25 (New Living Translation)
22 Because of this oath, Jesus is the one who guarantees this better covenant with God.
23 There were many priests under the old system, for death prevented them from remaining in office. 24 But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. 25Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.
